Dr. Aliasgar Bahrainwala’s mission to make advanced healthcare accessible globally has extended beyond India’s borders—most notably through his groundbreaking outreach program in Tanzania. With a commitment to capacity building, training, and delivering high-quality care, he has played a pivotal role in transforming the cardiac and transplant landscape in the region.

Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) – Empowering Local Expertise

Since 2017, Dr. Bahrainwala has been an instrumental force at the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute, one of Tanzania’s leading cardiac care centers. What began as a surgical collaboration has now evolved into a sustainable training program—empowering local cardiac surgeons with the skills and knowledge needed to perform complex procedures independently.

  • Dr. Bahrainwala personally trained the local surgical team, helping them reach the remarkable milestone of over 200 successful cardiac surgeries annually.

  • He holds the distinction of being the first surgeon in Tanzania to perform:

    • Bentall’s Procedure

    • Redo Cardiac Surgeries

    • Double Valve Replacements

    • Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) using LIMA-RIMA grafts

His efforts have laid a strong foundation for self-sustained cardiac care in the region.

Saifee Hospital Tanzania – Revolutionizing Private Healthcare

Dr. Bahrainwala brought the same pioneering spirit to the private healthcare sector through his association with Saifee Hospital Tanzania.

Here too, he was the first surgeon in a private setup to perform highly complex procedures such as:

  • Bentall’s Surgeries

  • Redo Valve Surgeries

  • Double Valve Replacements

  • CABG using Bilateral Mammary Artery (LIMA-RIMA) Grafts

His work at Saifee Hospital has elevated the standard of care in private institutions, offering Tanzanian patients advanced treatment options closer to home.

Muhimbili National Hospital – Pioneering Kidney Transplants

Recognizing the pressing need for organ transplant services in Tanzania, Dr. Bahrainwala extended his expertise to Muhimbili Government Hospital, one of the country’s largest public healthcare institutions.

  • He became the first cardiovascular surgeon to collaborate with the hospital’s urology team to initiate kidney transplant surgeries in the country.

  • This historic collaboration laid the groundwork for a comprehensive transplant program within Tanzania’s public health system.
